The club was founded by journalists on the London Evening News in 1976 and now visits some of the most pleasant club and village grounds in the Home Counties. There are tours every year - to the Cotswolds in June, rural Derbyshire in early September, the delights of south-west France at the beginning of October, and other occasional destinations. Barn Elms is a place of young families, wealth, gilets, and cricket. The Strollers’ sixth midweek game was upon us and started with a hiss and a roar as Rob Wall tossed up some grenades for the batters to pat away.


With only eight men, the road was always going to be tough but hope was always with us as we had captain Freddie Broster-Turley to lead us. FBT opened the wickets account, followed by Wall quickly after. However, extras were hurting the Strollers in typical fashion and the next two batters set themselves well in. 


Brad Trebilcock was called upon early to pitch the ball down the wicket, with hope of breaking the partnership. Trebilcock enjoying bowling tightly down the leg side and finally frustrated the batsman enough for him to send it to the moon and back and down into FBT’s safe hands. A fine dismissal. Alastair Macaulay took the final wicket of the innings with yet another catch from Broster-Turley. 


A target of 155 was set and Kevin Patterson and Pete Robertson were sent out to gather their 25 runs each. Sadly, they returned short of their required retirements.


Trebilcock and Andrew Boyes found themselves again in the middle together, running well between the wickets. But Trebilcock was caught in the covers and Boyes stumped.


Glen Oliver and Wall would have to be our saving grace. Glen was finding the middle of his bat well, which was to be expected, but he also found the middle of Wall’s backside, which allowed the ball to ricochet off the most seen Strollers bum, onto the stumps while Wall was out of his crease. What a bummer.

 

Could Freddie bat as well as he had fielded? No; bowled for six runs. In the meantime Oliver had retired after 25 but was able to return to the wicket with Macaulay, hoping they could bat us to victory. But it was not meant to be. The Strollers lost by 40 runs. 


However, the real prize was to be found in the Red Lion – food, beer, and just bloody good friends.
